It is quite risky to try to sail your Moth in November in Seattle. The water is 48 degrees, the air is similar at best, and the wind is often fresh. But if you don’t go, you will never know, so five Moths took their chances at Turkey Bowl this year.
Saturday was on the edge, 15-24 knots, but luckily pretty flat water. There was a tricky cross swell which made upwind on starboard a bit tricky. But downwind was nearly manageable, so it was racable. Dalton won the first 2 races, and Jonathan won the third.
Sunday looked like a bust, with a convergence zone directly over Shilshole, resulting in heavy rain and no wind. After some waiting and coffee and chili, we decided to go out, since we were already rigged. It was marginal foiling for the first 2 races. The breeze gradually built to 18 knots, so it was a perfect day. In the end we had 6 races, with all five boats finishing all the races.
Anthony had his most consistent day on the water so far, and was going well at times. Lindsay had many good moments, and good upwind speed in the moderate breeze. Matt was ripping on Sunday, getting 4 seconds, often right behind Dalton. Jonathan had a good day Saturday but was mixed on Sunday. Dalton was his usual super solid self, winning 8 out of 9 races, usually easily.
It was a great weekend. We are all super psyched for Coronado (Jan, 28 to 31) and Hawaii (Feb. 18 to 21). We are also racing at Shilshole on Dec. 6, if anyone wants to join us!
Final Results, Turkey Bowl 2009
Dalton Bergan 8 points
Jonathan McKee 18
Matt Pistay 22
Lindsay Buchan 30
Anthony Boscolo 36
Moths Rule.
